The Amerind Foundation offers educational programs for schools:
Educational activities have been designed to interweave Arizona Department of Education Based Teaching and Learning for grades 4, 5, and 6, in both Science and Social Studies, with the unique assets of the Amerind Foundation. The outdoor activities take place among stimulating geological formations and a prehistoric archaeology site. The beginning interactive archaeology exercise reflects the stated objectives of the Arizona Department of Education Science Standards: "Science is a dynamic process of gathering and evaluating information, looking for patterns, and then revising and testing possible explanations." Social Studies Standards are addressed through various activities. These involve students with the tools and technologies of the adaptive hunting and gathering cultures. Review of the unique Hohokam, Mogollon, and Anasazi prehistoric cultures shows how they altered their environment with housing and irrigation. Other activities may include a game that gives students an opportunity to appreciate the abundant variety of food crops domesticated in the New World and to realize how these foods feed the world today; exploring a time line designed to help develop chronological thinking; learning how archaeologists use pottery to date sites. Younger students (K-3) have a special program. Following the storytelling tradition of Native Americans, a story reading sessions is conducted in the museum and is followed by a tailored tour of artifacts and exhibits that are suggested in the selected story. Next they participate in activities integrating the story and the museum tour. The Amerind Foundation offers a special opportunity for students to not only have the unique experience an exceptional museum but also to participate in meaningful educational activities. Embedded in all their activities is the concept of the importance of archaeological preservation. Our scenic picnic grounds, close to the Museum, offer a quiet, secluded and shady area for a picnic lunch following the program. There are also rest rooms nearby. Planning packages will be sent to participants upon scheduling. Hope to see you soon!
