The Gran Chichimeca was Charles Di Peso's term for the vast area comprising Mesoamerica and the southwestern United States. Associated for most of his professional life with the Amerind Foundation, Di Peso, one of the few larger-than-life American archaeologists, was responsible for the excavation of the great Mexican site of Casas Grandes and other sites along the San Pedro River in Arizona. He also espoused a complex theory of cultural dynamics.

The essays in this volume are the result of a seminar examing Di Peso's theories about contact, conquest, and culture change.
