Wedding Clothes and the Osage Community: A Giving Heritage with Daniel Swan, PhD and Renee Harris (Osage)

Daniel Swan, PhD and Renee Harris (Osage) will present a summary of the research and process behind the publication and exhibition “Wedding Clothes and the Osage Community: A Giving Heritage.” They will discuss the importance of reciprocal gift exchange in the cultural lives of the Osage people and Mrs. Harris will share some of the experiences and insights gained when her son Robert served as the Drum Keeper for the Pahsulin people.
Daniel Swan is Professor Emeritus in Anthropology and Curator Emeritus in Ethnology at the Sam Noble Museum, University of Oklahoma. His career as a museum based anthropologist focused on heritage documentation research and collaborative exhibition and publication initiatives with Native American communities and their members. Swan’s publications include Wedding Clothes and the Osage Community: A Giving Heritage (with Jim Cooley), Art of the Osage (with Garrick Bailey) and Peyote Religious Art: Symbols of Faith and Belief. In retirement Dan continues to work on a range of publication initiatives.
Renee Harris is a citizen of the Osage Nation and a member of the Pahsulin (Gray Horse) District, where her son, Robert, served as Drum Keeper from 1996-1999. Mrs. Harris was an important contributor to the Osage Wedding exhibition and its associated public programs. At the Wahzhazhe Cultural Center in Pawhuska, Oklahoma she coordinated a community exhibition of Osage Wedding regalia drawn from family collections. Renee, her daughter Leah Bighorse and several granddaughters presented public programs at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures, Indiana University and the Sam Noble Museum, University of Oklahoma.
