Guided Hikes with Dr. Eric Kaldahl

Come and take a Guided Hike with Amerind’s CEO Dr. Eric Kaldahl.
Hikes are FREE to all Amerind Members.

Guided hikes for non-members are $22 per adult; $20 seniors (62+) and youth (10-17). This fee includes admission to the Amerind Museum & Art Galley on the day of your hike.

Guided hikes are limited to 20 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can sign up by calling the Amerind Museum Store at (520)586-3666.

Each program will involve 1-2 miles of hiking and last 2 hours. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and hiking. Don’t forget your water and sun protection (even in winter months). As with all Amerind’s outdoor activities, participants will need to complete a recreational liability waiver just before the hike. All the Texas Canyon Nature Preserve hiking rules apply.

Ethnobotany Hikes: Learn about the plants used to make beautiful baskets and other tools. Participants will begin in the classroom with objects from the museum’s collection of contemporary Indigenous baskets and then go on the trails to see the plants used by weavers.

Beginner’s Bird Walk with Homer Hansen

Enjoy a casual walk around the Amerind while spending time learning and practicing basic bird identification skills. Time will be spent at the ponds and along the trails observing and identifying common bird species. Homer will have a spotting scope. During the month of March, early spring migrants start passing through southeast Arizona. Enjoy a casual walk around the Amerind while looking for returning birds. Time will be spent at the ponds and along the trails observing and identifying our migratory (and resident) bird species. Homer will have a spotting scope. Please bring your own binoculars if you have them, and be sure to bring a hat, good hiking shoes, and water.

If you love the outdoors, the most cost effective is a 1-year $50 Nature Club Membership gives two adults and any children or grandchildren under 18 access to the hiking trails at no extra cost during our open hours. This membership will also give you access to guided hikes like these at no extra cost. Nature Club Members also receive four guest passes which you can use to visit the Amerind museum or give away to friends and family. Nature Club Members also get 10% off items in our Museum Store.

Make plans to join us on Saturday, September 26th or Sunday, September 27th from 10 am – 4 pm, for our Comcáac, (Seri) Show & Sale. This year we will be featuring the work of Master artists Maria Francesca Moreno and Valentina Torres, who will also be bringing the work of other Seri artists. Maria is known for her incredible basketry, known not only for her large pieces and tight weave, but also for her masterful designs. Valentina Torres is known for incredible basketry trays. (Please note that Ironwood carver, Miguel Estrella who was scheduled to come will be unable to join us)

The Seri people of Sonora, Mexico, also known as the Comcáac, people of the sea and desert. With resilience in the Sonoran Desert, they have created beautiful art that they will share with us in September.

Join us on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 12:00 pm (AZ time) for a free online talk, “Our Elder Brother Dwells There: How I’itoi Ki Moved from Mountain Peak to Basket Design.” with Dr. David Martinez.

“Learn about I’itoi, Elder Brother, who taught O’odham how to live well in their desert homelands. Learn where his home, his kih, is located, according to oral tradition. Most importantly, learn about how the symbol of this home, I’itoi kih, started appearing in O’odham baskets more than a century ago. What does it all mean?”

David Martínez (Akimel O’odham/Hia-ced O’odham/Mexican), Is a Professor of American Indian Studies and Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. He is the author of the forthcoming The Maze of History: Komal Hok, O’odham Teachings, and an Earth-Based Sense of Time (University of New Mexico Press, April 2026).

Martínez is also the author of Dakota Philosopher: Charles Eastman and American Indian Thought (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2009), Life of the Indigenous Mind: Vine Deloria Jr and the Birth of the Red Power Movement (University of Nebraska Press, 2019), My Heart Is Bound Up With Them: How Carlos Montezuma Became the Voice of a Generation (University of Arizona Press, 2023), and editor of The American Indian Intellectual Tradition: An Anthology of Writings from 1772 to 1972 (Cornell University Press, 2011).

Dr. Martínez is also the director and founder of the Institute for Transborder Indigenous Nations (ITIN), which is housed in the School of Transborder Studies at ASU, where it focuses on Indigenous nations impacted by the US-Mexico Border.
